What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is experienced by all of us on a daily basis and is not necessarily a trance like state of mind, it is actually a healthy natural state of mind, most of us don't even realise we're doing it but it happens quite frequently throughout the day when we read a book or daydream. Hypnosis is a natural but altered state of mind which actively takes us away from our conscious mind set. Other examples of us doing this regularly would be whilst sitting at traffic lights, they turn green and we're still sitting there or you go in a lift and you find yourself walking out on the wrong floor or you drive somewhere and once you arrive, you don't really remember most of the trip (some of us call this auto-pilot). All of these examples are a form of an altered state of mind which is indeed hypnosis.
Brain scans have been carried out on people who are in hypnotic state and they show that brain wave activity moves from a Beta state to an Alpha state and then sometimes a Theta state. This is very similar activity to the pattern of brain activity shown during meditation.
How does hypnosis work?
Hypnosis works by targeting the sub-conscious mind & by overriding the conscious mind. This is done normally with using techniques such as Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and deep relaxation. It also uses direct language which the sub-conscious mind understands including metaphors, associations and patterns. Most people think that the conscious part of the mind is the most prominent, where it is actually the sub-conscious part of our mind which controls 90% of our behaviours.
Will I be in control of myself?
This is a very common concern and there really is no need to worry, as with the altered states mentioned above you are always in control and will be able to come out of hypnosis if you were to feel uncomfortable and felt the need to.
How does hypnosis feel?
Hypnosis is a wonderfully deep relaxed state. Its is very similar to the point just before you fall into a deep sleep. People experience different feelings with hypnosis some feel their bodies becoming quite heavy while others feel weightless - there is no right way to feel, its about what feels right for you.
